Its not JUST a phone

Day 4

One of the worst things of having my phone confiscated is that fact that, it wasen`t just loosing the ability of talking to people. Having a multi purpose phone like the iPhone is great, provided you have it with you!

Starting off with the most basic function, the alarm clock. My father had finally got me used to waking up with an alarm clock. And surprisingly, i was just beginning to get the hang of it. Now that was gone and i had to have dad wake me up again, much to his displeasure. Including on Tuesday having to cancel his morning run so that he could wake me up since mom was flying out of the city and could not do it. He would also have to personally come to my room to make sure i was awake since he couldn`t just call me.

And of course lets not forget the iPod. I had no music to listen to. Well i had no music to listen to you. And in 4 days i realized that the radio quality in the country has become just oh so bad. Not to mention little walks down the road were done in complete silence since there was no phone to plug in my earphones into.

Shazam. This is an iPhone specific application that can listen to a 30 second clip of a song and sync with the iTunes Music Store to find out the name for it. A very useful application since every now and then there are songs that we listen to and end up liking. In these 4 days, in no less than 3 occasions, have I heard a song, liked it and wanted to know the name, but couldn`t because i had no Shazam to tag it with!

And then there were the games. They can be so entertaining at times. Specially when out and you are not having the best time. Or in a car ride.

So having my phone taken away in the end didn`t just deprive me of calls and messages, but a whole lot more!!

Actually, we miss your phone!!

By day 3, all my friends slowly but surely started to realize that life without my precious cell phone is just not the same!

This day was Saturday, the one with the 2 football matches. Lots of phone activity goes on during these matches, and specially since i had somewhere to go at night and was not watching the match with other people.

Anyways, "we miss your phone" started all the way in the morning.. Two friends, who both live on 2 different ends of the city happened to be in my area, independently.. Both of them wanted to call but could not, simply because i had no phone!

And it just kept getting worse. People could not even call me to discuss the football matches. My friends actually wrote on my facebook about how they suddenly, magically, missed my phone.

I even went to the mall with my parents, at a time where somehow my mother forgot to carry her cell phone. So that left dad being the only person who had his phone and we had to stick like a pack of wolves hunting together because even if one of us drifted away, there was no way to find each other!

And even my tuition teacher tried calling me to cancel class that day, but since I was unreachable, i just ended up going there only to find out about how there was no class that day.

Getting back to more friends, co ordinating with any of them to meet them was virtually impossible. In fact I actually cancelled some planes for the simple reason of lack of ability to co ordinate.

Finally more people just admitted that they missed my millions of text messages and almost wished that my phone wasen`t taken away.

Maybe my phone wasen`t such a devil after all!!

Hahahahhahahahaaaha..

"Hahahhahahahaaha..", yes that was the reaction of all my friends, much like my parents, when i told them the tragic story of the cell phone. This is day 2.

Maybe you should know a little background first. Ever since i got the Apple iPhone, i am madly in love with it. Its almost unreal how much i care about this little electronic gadget. Many of my friends, including my girlfriend, think i care about the phone more than i care about them! Oh and just like any other kid my age, i send an insane number of text messages and make many hours worth of calls everyday!

So now when i go online on Facebook and MSN (my last living sources of communication with the outside world), i tell all my friends about my phone getting taken away. Let me quote some of their reactions (and yes most of them start off with a "ahahhahahahaaha..").

"HAHAHAHAHA. Too bad :)"

"Your precious iPhone? HAHAHAHA."

"Yay! No competition from your phone for a whole week =D I wonder how you'll survive though =P"

"and for ur cell...hahahhahahahahha!!!!"

"HAHAHA :P"

"HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHA
you so deserved that . for not calling me that is . :)"

"haha... sooo sad :P :("

Yeah i know, sweet friends right?

Well trying to go on and live without a phone, I remembered we have ways out of this thanks to the technological advancements in the 21st century. We have Skype!! So now we start using Skype and realize its just like a phone! Of course me finally having another way of vocal communication was much to the displeasure of my mother (who was very excited about my phone being taken away) and i am pretty sure the first time she saw me she thought i was talking to myself looking at the computer screen!

And with that we are 2 days down!!

I am gonna miss you...

Ok this is one of the tragedies in a 17 year old boy`s life. My beloved cell phone, that i love very very much and cannot really live without, got confiscated by my English teacher in school on Thursday. Along with me, a good friend also managed to get his phone taken away. So we begged for our phones back, but since this blog is called "8 days WITHOUT a phone" its no surprise that we didn`t get them back and so i won`t spend much time talking about it.

Our school laws state that a confiscated mobile phone stays with them for one week. But unfortunately the following Thursday is a holiday (stupid public holidays always come at the wrong time)!! So we only get it back next Friday, after school, making it 8 days (27th August 2009 - 4th September 2009).

Not lets look at a few important dates on my social calendar during this time period which i would have really needed my phone for.

Saturday, 29th August: 1) Manchester United vs Arsenal
2) Real Madrid vs Deportivo (la liga season opener)

Tuesday, 1st September: Girlfriend`s Birthday

Thursday, 3rd September: A good friend`s birthday (the one who`s phone got taken away with mine)

So now i head home, feeling incomplete without my phone in my pocket. And the phone-less troubles start right away. Since i didn`t have my phone, i had to listen to radio all the way home. And my, has the quality of that dropped so badly over the last few months.

Anyway, i come home and tell my parents and grand mother the heart breaking story. They of course find my miseries very amusing, and looking at the amount of time i spend on my phone, i do not blame them.

Now i had plans to meet up with a friend who`s down from Canada for a while that evening after SAT class. But since i have no phone, there was no way to co ordinate. But that wasen`t very hard as i just ended up dropping by at her place after class.

So day 1 was that. It felt very strange to not have my phone to wish goodnight before i slept. But oh well!! *sigh*
